It seems like it’s been some time since I’ve taken the time to sit down & write some original Elixir content but I wanted to share something new to highlight some of the innovative ways Elixir is being put to the test!

MMO Gaming
As an avid gamer, I love learning about companies that are building crucial aspects of their gaming platform in Elixir.
In this case DazzleRocks uses both Elixir & Rust to build robust distributed game servers to support their real-time multiplayer game.

Logistics/Food
ClusterTruck may be a Freudian slip waiting to happen, but it’s also an innovative food delivery platform that runs on Beam.
With a customer-to-driver messaging platform needs to be real-time & reliable, as well as a delivery tracking system that sends updated location information in 500 milliseconds, COO Brian Howenstein credits Elixir for much of their ongoing success.

Online Sports News
If you’re not familiar with Bleacher Report by name, you may well have seen some of their trademark cartoons online following any major sporting event.
According to a report by Erlang Solutions, Bleacher Report serves 1.5 Billion pages to it’s users each month.. now that is high volume!
Their shift from Ruby to Elixir allowed them to decrease their reliance on 150 servers to just 5, all whilst improving response time.
Forza Football

Live Sports Updates
Founded in Gothenburg, Sweden this company was founded as ‘Football Addicts’ later rebranded as Forza Football & sister company Forza FC.
The app allows you to see real-time updates from football matches in 1200 leagues across over 100 different countries!
They credit Erlang’s runtime system for allowing them to ‘build a highly concurrent system with strong fault tolerant characteristics. Providing better introspection capabilities & system debugging.’ - This is absolutely crucial when considering how quickly a goal update push notification needs to be sent for it to remain relevant.
Smart VR Lab

Virtual Reality Platform
Smart VR Lab helps companies to implement 360 video in scalable & efficient ways using their own CMS platform.
They’ve built the main web application for their platform in Elixir using Phoenix Live View with a specific focus on optimising video streaming in terms of performance, security & scaling.
So there we have it, 5 companies relying in Beam for a whole range of different products & services.
There is, of course, a recurring theme amongst the companies, they want to reap the key benefits of Erlang, but have opted for Elixir instead. Which can no doubt be attributed to it’s ease of use/simplicity compared to it’s predecessor.
I’d love to hear your thoughts, comment below & let me know!
