In this spotlight we’re looking at companies using Elixir to combat the climate crisis. Below are companies from around the world who are all helping to reduce wastage and help fight climate change, let’s take a look …
Keep Focus – Denmark
Keep Focus are specialists in energy management, monitoring and the installation of meters. They work with large companies, housing associations and the public sector, helping them to take control of their energy use. They gather consumption data and share this to encourage change and reduce wastage, creating savings and an overall greener profile.
Their aim is to eliminate waste in all areas including electricity, water and heating as well as fuel, garbage, plastic, paper, food and more.
They replaced their Ruby platform with Elixir. Elixir is used to build reliable, quality features and to maintain, modernise & scale their code base.
Sero – UK
Sero’s goal is to create a greener, more sustainable way to live by working with homeowners and property developers. They provide digital pathways and passports which set our clear steps on how people can achieve carbon zero homes and save time & money.
They have developed an invaluable tool to understand how homes are contributing to the UK’s adverse climate changes and to offer solutions on how to tackle it for the better.
They use Elixir & Nerves for their hardware devices and they’re using Elixir to develop and extend their existing products & tooling.
Emyze – Germany
Emyze have developed a clever wallet that makes CO2 emissions visible. Their application shows the carbon footprint behind everyday activities and products we consume.
They would like as many people as possible to use their application to help them make better, more informed decisions & to help in the fight against climate change.
They use Elixir to power their application and to develop & maintain their scalable, high-quality backend services.
The Weather Makers – Netherlands
The Weather Makers view water as the engine of all life on Earth and the primary driver of the weather & climate. They’re working towards restoring water cycles, achieving biosphere restoration, enhancing our food security and creating an overall healthier planet. They do this by designing & implementing new restoration projects and combining ecology with research, data, business, engineering and technology.
They use Elixir for their Backend coding for high-quality, performant and complex services.
Reel – Denmark
Reel is an electricity supplier who connects companies with renewable electricity to reduce emissions and electricity costs. They analyse companies’ energy consumption and provide a tailor-made solution. They build new solar & wind parks to match the company’s electricity usage and in return the company reduces its emissions & pays a reduced fixed price.
Elixir is used to build their digital infrastructure for their renewable energy platform.
Valified - Denmark
Valified help thousands of small to medium sized companies make the transition to a greener and more sustainable change. They provide sustainability reports, CO2 calculations as well as providing an easy way of handling ESG data.
They have a user-friendly digital CO2 calculator and they provide help & guidance for companies on how to reach their sustainability goals. Their platform also allows companies to create a sustainability report which they can share with their customers & suppliers to send a clear message they are helping to fight climate change.
Valified use Elixir on the Backend to create their platform and LiveView on the Frontend.
Sapiologie – France
Sapiologie work with companies to analyse the social, economic and environmental impacts of their product lines. They have developed tailor-made digital tools to guide companies and to quantify & simulate the impacts of their decisions in order to help them make better, greener choices.
They use Elixir & LiveView to build their helpful platform to ensure it’s scalable and reliable.
Bowery Farming – USA
Bowery Farming have reimagined farming to create sustainability and to eradicate trade-offs between quantity & quality. Their tech-powered indoor farms are powered by 100% renewable energy, have a state-of-the-art water recapture & filtration system and are pesticide & pollutant free. They also use less packaging which is made from 100% recycled materials.
Their farms can grow produce 365 days per year and their aim is for the agriculture industry to give back more to the planet then it takes.
Bowery Farming’s platform has been built in Elixir from the very beginning. It has made integrating their physical devices easy by having a single application and it has been great for quick prototyping & for concurrency. They use Elixir & Nerves for their custom-built hardware devices.

Maersk – Denmark
Maersk is an integrated transport and logistics company who simplify their customers supply chains. They are currently building a team for their new Energy Transition platform which will identify, measure, analyse and calculate carbon emissions. Their goal is to ensure they are a net zero company by 2040.
Maersk use Elixir for their application code along with LiveView for the Frontend. They are in the early stages of building the platform and Elixir will be used to build it from the ground up. Elixir will handle the complex data ingestions, calculation and publishing services with ease. It will also allow for their platform to be high-quality, resilient and maintainable.
It's great to see how Elixir can be used for such good causes and how it can make a huge difference to our world & the fight against climate change.
